I have this theory of blogging which I’m trying to work out. The theory is that blogging, while part of a vicarious conversation, is really a conversation with yourself. It can be reflective and thoughtful (as well as a range of other things), but really, we’re all talking to ourselves. We talk to ourselves about what’s important to us as individuals.
It needs more work.

I haven’t thought particularly about a theory of blogging, but for me blogging is writing for myself first – about what I find interesting or of importance. If other people also happen to find that interesting that’s wonderful, but no problem if they don’t either!
does it need to be any more complicated than that?

Well, if you want to write a paper on it, then yes, it gets complicated. There are all sorts of research into blogging, eg marketing, communicating, social networking, but I think we need to remember the reflexivity available via the medium. That’s the area I’m looking at, oh and I said I would write a paper on blogging for my professional development. D’oh!

I think the “conversation with oneself” that you have developed is a powerful way of looking at blogging….and would be an interesting alternative to “blogging as social networking”….maybe connections with your ideas to the history of diaries and notes in terms of the development of research, ideas and as archival material for our society and culture
I dunno…blogging for the future rather than the present
